After an eventful youth characterized by a 700-mile horseback ride to transport gold bars from Kentucky, military service, and breaking out of a Chicago prison, W.J. Boaz returned to Fort Worth and purchased most of modern-day East Fort Worth to create the Boaz Ranch in 1886. A successful businessman and real estate tycoon, W.J. Boaz and his family collectively owned and developed much of Fort Worth in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
In 1969, a group of investors including Texas Governor John Connally, Sid Bass, and Mike Myers purchased a large swathe of Woodhaven with plans to develop the area. The early 1970s experienced the opening of the Woodhaven Golf Course and Country Club, bringing both locals and traveling professionals to the area to play golf and socialize.
In 2007, the City of Fort Worth established Tax Increment Financing District #13 (i.e., the Woodhaven TIF) to further develop more than 1,100 acres in Woodhaven. The 2010s saw new owners purchase the golf course and country club, but revenue gradually declined. COVID-19 temporarily shuttered businesses nationwide in early 2020, further hurting revenue. Despite a post-lockdown bounce as golfers and neighbors returned to the property, Winter Storm Uri in February 2021 wreaked havoc on the property, freezing and bursting pipes across the golf course and clubhouse. Facing over $2 million in pipe repairs and a dwindling customer base, Woodhaven Golf Course and Country Club was forced to close.
In June 2022, the property was purchased by a developer who quickly ran into financial trouble. Despite receiving over $1 million dollars in insurance money from the previous owner to address the burst pipes, the new title holder failed to make payments on property taxes, debt, a mechanic’s lien, and other vendor invoices.
Due to the title holder’s failure to pay, the golf course and country club were sold in a foreclosure auction at the Tarrant County Courthouse. After being acquired by a new owner, Crescendo Development assumed management of the property in May 2024. Crescendo Development immediately addressed lingering issues by mowing the greens and boarding up broken windows to create a safer and more attractive property.
Crescendo Development is committed to collaborating with Woodhaven’s residents, neighborhood associations, local developers, and other stakeholders to determine the best future use of the property.
